IAN McELHINNEY (Actor, Great Britain)

Guest presence: friday 7.2. a sunday 9.2.

Ian McElhinney is an actor and director from Northern Ireland. His most famous roles include General Dodonna in the film ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, Val-El in the TV series KRYPTON and Ser Barristan Selmy in the HBO show, GAME OF THRONES.

With a career spanning over thirty years, McElhinney has also participated in many film and TV productions such as HORNBLOWER, COLD FEET, QUEER AS FOLK, and THE TUDORS.

In 2010, McElhinney was confirmed as Ser Barristan Selmy in the TV show, GAME OF THRONES. As a knight who has spent more than forty years in the Kingsguard, his character was one of the most honourable in the Seven Kingdoms. McElhinney, who had read the books beforehand, was grateful for how his character was used by the production team, but he was a little disappointed with how his role with the TV show ended. He was one of the key figures in the first, third, fourth, and fifth seasons of the show, until he was killed by the Sons of the Harpy. His abrupt exit after 25 episodes signalled an end for ideals of friendliness and noblesse in the entire show.

Recently, Ian McElhinney played the role of General Dodonna in the film ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. This role was originally played by the late Alex McCrindle in the original Star Wars movies. McElhinney also appeared as grandfather Joe in the Irish sitcom, DERRY GIRLS, and as Val-El in the TV show, KRYPTON. The latter show is broadcast on the TV channel Syfy around the world, and it documents the history of Superman’s family.
