John Higgins is an English comic book artist, writer, and colourist. Born in Walton, Liverpool, he left school at the age of 15 to join the British Army before eventually pursuing a career in illustration and comics.
Higgins began his professional comics career in the mid-1970s, with his first published work appearing in Brainstorm Comix in 1975. Just two years later, he illustrated the cover for 2000 AD #43 and soon decided to become a full-time freelance artist. By 1981, he had become a regular contributor to 2000 AD while also producing covers for Marvel UK.
He gained international recognition during the mid-1980s as part of the celebrated “British Invasion” of American comics. Higgins served as the colourist on two of the most influential graphic novels ever published – Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke – both written by Alan Moore. His acclaimed colouring work led to numerous opportunities in the American comics industry, while he continued his long-standing collaboration with British titles, particularly Judge Dredd, a character he worked on for more than two decades.
He illustrated the acclaimed Hellblazer: Son of Man, one of the most memorable stories featuring John Constantine, and later created his own dystopian science-fiction mini-series – Razorjack.
Throughout his career, Higgins has also produced artwork for animation, film projects, and numerous book covers. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the comics industry, he was honoured with the prestigious Inkpot Award in 2011.
