Giancarlo Esposito is an American actor and director. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and lived in Rome, Italy, until the age of five, when his family moved to the United States and settled in Manhattan, New York City. He studied at Elizabeth Seton College in New York, where he earned a two-year degree in radio and television communications. Esposito made his Broadway debut in 1968, marking the beginning of a long and diverse career in theater, film, and television.
From 2009 to 2011, Esposito portrayed Gus Fring in seasons two through four of the AMC drama series Breaking Bad. As the calculating and composed head of a New Mexico–based methamphetamine operation, he became the show’s primary antagonist in its fourth season. His performance received widespread critical acclaim, earning him the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2012, as well as a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series the same year.
Esposito continued to expand his television work with a prominent role in the first season of ABC’s Once Upon a Time, which premiered in October 2011. He played the dual role of Sidney Glass, a reporter for The Daily Mirror in the town of Storybrooke, Maine, who is secretly the Genie imprisoned in the Magic Mirror and controlled by the Evil Queen in a parallel fairy-tale world. He later reprised the role as a guest star in subsequent seasons.
In 2016, Esposito voiced Akela in Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau. The two later reunited on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, where Esposito plays a major role as Moff Gideon, while Favreau serves as the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer. Esposito’s performance further cemented his reputation for portraying complex and formidable antagonists.
In 2017, Esposito returned to the role of Gus Fring in the Breaking Bad prequel series Better Call Saul, receiving additional praise for deepening and expanding the character’s backstory.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys as Stan Edgar, appearing in the first-season finale and reprising the role in the second and third seasons.
In February 2025, Esposito appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: Brave New World as Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder, a member of the Serpent Society.
Beyond live-action performances, he has also made a significant impact in voice acting, notably portraying Antón Castillo, the main antagonist of the video game Far Cry 6, a character whose appearance was modeled after Esposito himself.
