David Anders Holt, known professionally as David Anders, is an American television and stage actor. He was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, and began acting in school plays at a young age, although he spent much of his high-school years playing sports such as basketball and tennis. At 15, he portrayed Philip the Apostle in a regional theater production of Jesus Christ Superstar. At 18, he landed the role of George in his high school’s production of Our Town, followed by Freddy Eynsford-Hill in My Fair Lady. After moving to Los Angeles, he adopted the stage name David Anders, as the name David Holt was already in use by another actor.
In 2001, he secured the role of Julian Sark on Alias. Originally cast as a guest star, he quickly became a series regular and remained on the show until 2006. During this period, he also guest-starred on popular series such as Charmed, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy.
He later joined the second season of NBC’s hit series Heroes as Adam Monroe/Takezo Kensei, a regenerative immortal. Once again, he was called upon to use his British accent, a skill he had showcased in Alias. He continued to appear across major TV titles, including 24, Warehouse 13, House, Arrow, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and more. Between 2010 and 2011, he guest-starred as John Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries, returning for a cameo in the show’s 2017 finale.
From late 2011, Anders appeared in a recurring role as Victor Frankenstein — and his Storybrooke counterpart Dr. Whale — in ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Since 2015, he has portrayed fan-favorite main villain Blaine DeBeers in the US series iZombie.
Outside of acting, Anders joined his Alias and Heroes co-star Greg Grunberg’s charity ensemble Band From TV in 2006, performing as a lead vocalist. The band also featured Hugh Laurie (House) on keyboards and James Denton (Desperate Housewives) on guitar, with proceeds supporting major charitable organizations.
